Flooding to your Cleveland home after flash floods

8/11/2019 (Permalink)

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, out in the country, or even in the desert, there is potential for flooding. Anywhere it can rain, it can flood.

A variety of events can cause flooding, like: heavy rains, when ocean waves come onshore, if snow melts too fast, or when dams or levees break. A flooding event may occur over a long period and could last days, weeks, or longer.

The most dangerous type of flood, a flash flood, happens quickly with little or no warnings. Flash floods are the top weather-related killer in the U.S. since they can roll boulders, tear out trees and destroy buildings of low-lying areas in less than six hours, caused by intense rainfall from a thunderstorm or several thunderstorms.

At least 25% of the business that close after an event like a flood never reopen their doors. As little as one-inch of water can cause costly damage to your property. That's where we are here to help to keep businesses in business.

We have seen a lot of flash floods in Cleveland this summer. If you find yourself with flood damage give us a call!

Preventing Electrical Fires to your Cleveland home

Electrical fires cause millions of dollars in damages, while also claiming lives in the process. There are so many possible causes for these types of fires. One of these causes can be faulty wiring throughout the house, and overloading connection for more than they were designed for. Improper use of extension cords and power strips can cause a situation. Even something as simple as small animals chewing through wiring in the wall can cause a fire.

You can prevent electrical fires in the home by following a few safety tips. When purchasing a used heating appliance, make sure the temperature switch will shut down the equipment if the thermostat fails. When doing duct work, make sure you use a licensed professional. Anywhere there is an electric current, there is a chance of a fire. By the time you see or smell smoke, the electrical fire may already be out of control. SERVPRO of Gateway wants you to stay safe and take action immediately to repair and replace faulty wiring in your home to reduce the risk of an unwarranted situation. Protect your pets from fire damage

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

Approximately 500,000 pets are affected by fires every year, according to the United States Fire Administration. Promote the safety of the people and animals in your home in the event of a fire emergency by planning ahead. From preventative caution to making an evacuation plan that includes pet safety, here are three pet preparation steps you can take today.

It's important to keep animals away from open flames such as candles. Make sure your candles are in a secure location that cannot be knocked over.

In the event of a fire, if your pets are not able to make it out of the house with you, let the responding firefighters know that. They will do everything they can to recover your animals from the home.

Make sure you have all your pets records in a secure place so they can be accessed in the event of a fire.

Pets are like family. Make sure they are apart of your fire evacuation plan.

Spring is Here

5/11/2019 (Permalink)

We want to give you a few tips since we have been drowning in the rain so far this Spring.  As the temperatures climb and you just have to get outside to enjoy the warmer weather, make your venture out a productive one.

Take a look at your Roof to see if you have any shingles missing or other damages the winter winds may have caused. Don’t forget to clean the Gutterswhile you are on the ladder.  How about those underground or exterior Drains?

The winter could have wreaked havoc on your Siding or the exterior Paint.  Because of the mountainous terrain most of us have basements so check for Cracks in the Block or Foundation.  Remember to check the Caulking around doors and windows.

If you have managed to survive the winter without water entering your House or Business, make it a point to keep them dry this spring and summer too.

Tips for preventing flood damage

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Here’s some helpful tips to help prevent basement flooding:

To prevent water from leaking through your foundation, look to gutters for your first line of defense.

While gutter-and-downspout systems protect your house from rainwater and snow melt, they can also compound drainage problems by concentrating roof runoff at a house's corners close to the foundation.

To carry water away, attach a sloped leader to each gutter and guide water at least 10 feet from the foundation.

Downspouts can also be directed to dump directly into an above or underground catch basin which will redistribute the water slowly back into the ground via small holes drilled throughout the basin.

Plug gaps and holes in basement.

If you see water dribbling into the basement through cracks or gaps around plumbing pipes, you can plug the openings yourself with hydraulic cement or polyurethane caulk.

Check your landscaping.

Check that your landscaping isn’t allowing water to pool around your foundation.

Soil should always slope away from your foundation for at least three feet. If the soil around your foundation is level or slopes back toward your home, add enough fresh soil to allow water to flow away and allow at least six inches of clear space between your foundation and your landscaping.

Maintain Your Plumbing.

While most of the hazards that lead to water in the basement come from outside water; water and drain pipes inside your home could also cause an issue. Plumbing maintenance begins with using your drains properly, including sinks, bathtubs, showers, and toilets.

Waterproof the Walls.

Waterproofing the walls is an effective way of keeping rain- and groundwater out of your basement.

You can paint the interior of your basement walls with a waterproofing product, while a professional waterproofing company will need to waterproof the exterior side of your foundation.

Water in your basement can lead to mold growth and that can lead to health concerns!

Be vigilant in checking for water leaks in your home and basement to avoid big water problems in the future!

The Facts About Cleaning Smoke Damage After a House Fire

4/19/2019 (Permalink)

The Facts About Cleaning Smoke Damage After a House Fire

Many homeowners think that they can clean-up smoke damage to their home after it has been burned in a fire. Unfortunately, that is never a good idea. Cleaning up smoke and soot damage requires professionals to do the job.

Bring in the Fire Damage Pros

First off, a house that has been burned in a fire is typically not safe to enter or spend time in. The integrity of walls and floors may have been damaged, along with other hazards. It’s important not to enter the home until professionals tell you it is safe to do so.

While you should not undertake trying to clean up smoke and soot damage from a house fire yourself, you should get the professionals into your as soon as possible. Ash and smoke, if left untreated, will cause corrosion, discoloration and a lingering powerful and offensive odor. Ash, specifically, will start causing damage and discoloration almost immediately and the damage may be permanent and irreversible. Anything that was made of plastic will begin discoloring within minutes. Metals will easily tarnish and corrode, and fiberglass will begin to yellow.

If you get fire damage restoration professionals in soon enough after a house fire, they can mitigate or eliminate the smoke and ash damage from the fire and prevent further damage to your property. Unfortunately, if you don’t get the pros in early, the damage becomes worse and worse and the costs to repair will begin to skyrocket within just a few weeks!

Know Who to Hire

Many companies claim to be fire damage restoration specialists, but they may not actually have the proper training and certification to do the job. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is the primary oversight agency for the industry. Companies recognized, registered and certified by the IICRC will have taken extensive coursework to earn their certification.

What a Trained and Certified Fire Damage Restoration Professional Does

A trained and certified fire damage restoration professional will first identify all affected materials and the source of odors, if possible. They will be extremely thorough. They will identify what can be salvaged and cleaned and what cannot be and must be completely replaced. They will then begin the clean-up process by removing built-up ash residue. Once the ash is cleaned, they can better identify the sources of odors, which they will treat with special detergents made to neutralize the odors. Once fire damaged materials are treated, they will be sealed to prevent future odors from emitting into your home.

5 Simple Steps for an Insurance Home Inventory

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

Five Simple Steps for an Insurance Home Inventory

You know how much you paid for that new TV; same for your computer. But what about those plastic bins of toys you keep under the stairs? Your collection of antique china? That expensive woodworking equipment? You might have already taken stock of the big things, but in an emergency, could you do a mental household inventory list and name all your valuables? That's why it's important to do a home inventory. For peace of mind, and for insurance purposes, a home inventory is just a smart move. It can help you decide how much and what type of homeowners' insurance to buy, speed up the claims process, and help verify losses for your income tax return. Where do you start? READ ON!

1. Starting a Household Inventory- Get Organized

First of all, you'll need to get organized. You'll want to document things like the insides of your tool boxes and closets; start a household inventory list. Tidy up; it's easier to see what you have if your possessions aren't in piles on the floor of your closet or crumpled up in a junk drawer.

2. Starting an Insurance Home Inventory- Method to the Madness

Before you start making your home inventory list, plan your starting point. Map your course through your household and move room to room methodically. By plotting your course in advance, you're saving yourself time and also decreasing your chances of missing important inventory items. For an insurance home inventory, remember to include your attic, garage, and even detached structures (like your shed).

3. Making a Home Inventory List- Document Everything

How you document your household inventory is important. Photography is your friend; go from room to room, taking pictures (or even video, provided you narrate!) as you go. Make special note of your most valuable items (jewelry, antiques, electronics) and where you keep them. It's also helpful to keep receipts and to note the serial numbers for your gadgets.

What type of items do you include on your household inventory list?

  • Furnishings (bookcases, cabinets, couches, tables, drapes, lamps)
  • Appliances (stove, washer/dryer, hair dryer, scale, vacuum)
  • Electronics (Flash drives, gaming systems, tablets, chargers, computers, DVD collection)
  • Lawn and Garden (patio furniture, lawn mower, snow blower, hoses, bikes)
  • Antiques and Collectibles (baseball cards, dolls, signage, toys, stamps, coins, art)

What details do you include about the items on your household inventory list?

  • Provide a general description of the inventory item
  • List the quantity of those items
  • Note the date each item was purchased
  • Specify how much you paid for each item on your inventory list

4. Securing Your Insurance Home Inventory- Store It Somewhere Safe

You'll be tempted to keep the inventory list in your home, but that's definitely not the safest place. Create a private album on an online site like Flickr or on the Cloud, and label it "Home Inventory." Print your inventory and keep it in a safety deposit box. Whatever you do, don't keep your only record of your possessions on your property.

5. Maintaining Your Home Inventory List- Update it Frequently

Whenever you make a big purchase, or even just every couple of years, reevaluate. This is also a good excuse to de-clutter as you go. Remember, an out-of-date home inventory could hold up the claims process at a time when that's the last thing you need.

American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

It’s time to spring forward! As people TURN their clocks forward one hour, the American Red Cross reminds everyone to TEST their smoke alarms.

This weekend is also a good time for everyone to take these lifesaving steps to help prepare households for home fires, the nation’s most frequent disaster:

  • Check smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Test smoke alarms once a month. Change the batteries at least once a year, if your model requires it. Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms, and sleeping areas.
  • Create and practice your home fire escape plan. Fire experts agree that people may have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late. This weekend, create a home fire escape plan with your household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Escape plans should include at least two ways to escape from every room and a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone knows where to meet.

HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN SAVING LIVES

Each year, the Red Cross responds to more than 62,000 disasters—the vast majority of which are home fires. Every day, seven people die in home fires, and most tragedies occur in homes without working smoke alarms. That’s why the Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign with community partners in 2014 to reduce needless deaths and injuries.

So far, the Home Fire Campaign has reached more than 1.7 million people and is credited with saving more than 500 lives across the country. The campaign’s volunteers and partners have also:

  • Installed more than 1.5 million free smoke alarms
  • Reached more than 1.3 million children through youth preparedness programs
  • Made more than 660,000 households safer from the threat of home fires

People can visit redcross.org/homefires for free resources and to learn more about how to protect themselves and their loved homes from fire, or contact their local Red Cross to find out about smoke alarm installation events in their community.

Getting Rid of Soot Odors after Fire Damage

Getting Rid of Soot Odors after Fire Damage

Any Cleveland homeowner who is unfortunate enough to face a house fire of any size knows that the lingering smell of soot is unpleasant. We at SERVPRO see this all the time in our work – even after restoration is complete and the affected area is thoroughly cleaned, the smell of soot often lingers and is very distressing for homeowners.

In some cases, the best way to remove smoke smells after fire damage is utilizing a piece of equipment called an ozone machine. Ozone machines are odor removal powerhouses. They are capable of removing even pungent soot odors and making a home smell fresh and clean once more.

There is only one drawback of ozone machines, and that is that we cannot use them in places where there are people, plants or pets. That means that they are not suitable for use in fire restoration situations where you are still living in your home during cleaning. However, if you have to move out for a few days during restoration, ozone is an ideal solution for post-fire smells.

Ozone is a naturally occurring gas. Ozone occurs after lightning strikes or during thunderstorms and is responsible for the fresh, clean smell you notice in the air after a storm passes.

Ozone is also known as nature’s deodorizer due to its ability to remove unpleasant smells. SERVPRO of Gateway uses it in fire restoration situations because it has a powerful deodorizing effect on lingering soot smells.

How does ozone act as a deodorizer? It is a straightforward process. Ozone is an unstable molecule, and it reacts quickly to other molecules when it comes into contact with them. The extra oxygen atom in the ozone binds to odor particles and destroys them. This chemical reaction takes the molecules apart and thus gets rid of the smell.

We train our certified technicians to apply ozone with due care and attention. We properly contain the affected area, and our team knows just how much ozone to apply for maximum effect.

Because ozone has a short life, your home is safe to inhabit very soon after the treatment is complete.

For situations where it seems impossible to get rid of that lingering smell, ozone is a powerful solution.

For help dealing with the cleanup after a fire, call SERVPRO of Gateway for help.

SERVPRO's Water Loss Recovery Service Includes Sanitizing Affected Properties

SERVPRO's Water Loss Recovery Service Includes Sanitizing Affected Properties

You have a lot to worry about when your Cleveland home is awash with water. Your biggest worry is probably how to extract the water and dry the soaked contents. Contamination is probably the last thing in your mind unless the flooding is from sewage back up or storm water. You are not alone in this line of thinking as most people only realize there is contamination at the very late stages of the restoration. So, how can you eliminate contamination through the steps taken during restoration?

The level of contamination in cases ofwater damage depends on the kind of water that causes flooding. At SERVPRO, we follow industrial standards that identify three types of water that floods properties. These types are black, grey and clean water and the contamination levels are highest in black water and lowest or nonexistent in clean water. Even potable drinking water can degrade to gray or black water if left unattended.

In addition to identifying the water type, our SERVPRO technicians also consider the materials affected by the water. If there was a carpet affected by clean or grey water, we treat it on both sides with an EPA-registered disinfectant. We also use the same disinfectant on the floor after extracting the water. This minimizes chances of further contamination. Any upholstery in the affected area might also be contaminated. Unlike the carpet, which is easier to clean, upholstery has different nooks and crannies, so it requires special attention. Using tools such as ULV foggers, our team can administer the disinfectant in the form of a mist to reach and remove contaminants even in hidden parts of any upholstery item. Generally, we can group furnishings in a containment chamber for large disinfecting efforts.

Cleanliness is a relative state that depends on the percentage of contaminants eliminated. Properties can achieve four different levels of cleanliness depending on the effort put. From the dirty state, cleaning can change the property to sanitary or disinfected. This recovery from a water loss is the states that SERVPRO technicians can achieve. Sterile conditions are beyond our scope and service. These environments are needed in hospitals, labs, and other such structures. Reaching a sanitary state is the goal of most restoration processes. Our SERVPRO certified technicians extract the water, vacuum and deodorize any affected areas ensuring they attain sanitary conditions.

Calling SERVPRO of Gateway eases the restoration process.

What to Do Until We Arrive During a Fire Damage

House fire damage

A fire can be devastating. It leaves behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Fire damages can affect ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need thorough professional cleaning. • If electricity is off, empty freezer/ refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor
  • Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/ bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant

Call SERVPRO of Gateway at 216-575-1985, if you've had a fire or would like to know how we can help in the event you do.

Review your insurance policies in 2019!

3/3/2019 (Permalink)

Are you making a New Year's Resolution? Statistically, more than half of all resolutions fail... but they don't have to. We have some resolutions you can actually keep this year. Even better? You can accomplish most of these in January and be sitting pretty for the rest of the year, worry free with a simple insurance audit!

Update Home Inventory

Your home inventory is a tool that your agent can use to determine the right level of coverage for your homeowners insurance. Plus, if you have a claim, having an up-to-date inventory will benefit you and get your claim paid faster. If you haven't done an inventory on your home in a while, we have some tips on where to start. If you have completed an inventory, right after the holidays are and ideal time to update! Be sure to share the updated home inventory with your agent when you're done.

Right-Size Your Life Insurance

Life insurance is not one-size-fits-all. Your coverage needs to evolve over time. If you don't have a policy yet, now is a great time to talk to your agent about what type of policy would best suit your needs (and your budget.) We have six things you should consider when you are looking at coverage.

If you do already have life insurance, is it working hard for you? Could you get more benefit out of your policy while you are still living? Maybe. Talk to your agent about the ways you can make your existing policy work for you and your family.

Earn Discounts

Did you know that you can play a part in determining your auto insurance rates? With Driveology, you have the chance to earn discounts based on your good driving behavior. You can also monitor your vehicle health and environmental impact in the process.

If you have a teen driver in the house, you may be able to save even more with you Young Driver Safety program. With this program, drivers under the age of 25 can learn safe driving behaviors, and help you earn discounts on your auto policy premiums.

Prepare for the Unexpected

You try to be as prepared as possible, but you never know what is right around the corner. Prepare for unexpected risks with an umbrella policy. Umbrella earns its name because the coverage arches over your vehicle and homeowner's insurance to provide an extra layer of protection: it starts where vehicle and homeowner's insurance liability limits stop. You might be surprised by all the things umbrella policies cover for an affordable price.

Call Your Agent

5 things NOT to store in your garage!

3/3/2019 (Permalink)

With the onset of Spring in the Treasure Valley, most of us try to accomplish new goals, get a new fresh start. Getting healthy, organizing our homes, bettering our lives' always seem to be at the top of the list. One space to start cleaning and organizing is the garage! That extra storage area that easily becomes a catchall for excess items.  We have compiled a list of items that should not be stored in your garage. Get them out and reclaim your space.

  1. Paint- Because the garage is prone to extreme temperature changes, paint should not be stored in the garage.  Recycle paint according to your county guidelines or donate it.
  2. Electronics- If you are putting electronics out in the garage, you must not be using them.  Donate these items because they can’t withstand the temperature fluctuations and will easily break.
  3. Propane and Hazardous Chemicals- Proper ventilation is key for storage of propane and hazardous chemicals.  For safety reasons, these items need to be stored outside.
  4. Food- Keeping food in the garage is an open invitation to rodents and insects.  Although shopping in bulk can save money, storing extra food in the garage will cause problems. The moisture and humidity will spoil the food. Find room in the house for food storage.
  5. Cardboard boxes- Insects, mice and other rodents love cardboard.  Invest in waterproof plastic bins to store your items.

Hope these tips help you gain back your garage.

Flooding Facts

2/23/2019 (Permalink)

Flooded Business in Cleveland, OH

According to the National Weather Service (NOAA). "Approximately 75% of all Presidential disaster declarations are associated with flooding." NOAA lists that the most common flood hazards in the United States are:

  • Flash Flooding
  • River Flooding
  • Storm Surge and Coastal Inundation from Tropical and Non-Tropical Systems
  • Burn Scars/Debris Flows (Caused by Wildfires)
  • Ice/Debris Jams
  • Snowmelt
  • Dry Wash (Caused by heavy rainfall in dry areas)
  • Dam Breaks/Levee Failure

Unfortunately, even people who do not live in areas that are prone to flooding may become flood victims at some point. In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $3.5 billion in annual losses in the US, and commercial flood claims average more than $75,000 (NFIP).

Here in Cleveland, OH, flooding events are unfortunately common, especially during this time of year. The combination of tropical systems, clay heavy soil (slow to absorb water), and a tendency for severe storms (high amount of rainfall in a small-time frame) provides the perfect recipe for flash floods. Flood insurance is a must for most people throughout our metroplex, particularly those that are close to any creeks or rivers. Follow these flood safety tips to keep you and your family safe during a flooding event.

Ways to Prevent Fire Damage Part 1

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

Soot covered walls after a Christmas Eve grease fire.

With the holidays behind us hopefully everyone has put up their Christmas decorations. As homeowners it is essential to be mindful of the presence of fire hazards and to minimize the possibility of them causing a structure fire. A good example is keeping around a severely dehydrated, and highly flammable Christmas tree too long. SERVPRO of Gateway has compiled the following prevention tips for some areas in your home to help keep you and your loved ones safe from possible fire hazards throughout the new year.

In the kitchen:

• Avoid leaving cooking food unattended. If a grease fire occurs, use baking soda to extinguish it. NEVER use water on a grease fire. You can smother the fire in the pan by starving it of oxygen by placing a lid over it. Always supervise children that are cooking and educate on the dangers of fire and cooking appliances.

• Be aware of where you leave pot holders, dish towels, aprons and any cooking utensils.

• Ensure that electrical appliances are far from sinks, flames or hot plates

• Invest in carbon monoxide detector if your home does not already have one if you use natural gas for heating and cooking.

In living areas & bedrooms:

• Make your home a smoke free environment if possible, or at least ensure that cigars, cigarettes, and pipes are properly extinguished prior to disposal as they may continue to burn and may reignite.

• Recycle and replace appliances with damaged electrical cords

• Avoid running electrical wires or cords under the weight of heavy furniture and rugs

• If you feel that you often have to unplug an appliance to plug in another because your outlet is overloaded, reconsider spacing out appliances to other outlets

• Be aware that clothing or draperies do not rest atop lighting such as desk lamps.

Take a moment from your day to check the areas in your home and see if there are any possible fire hazards.

Check out our next blog for fire safety prevention tips for your bathrooms and garage from SERVPRO of Gateway.

Ways to Prevent Fire Damage Part 2

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damaged bathroom after a Christmas Eve grease fire.

In our previous blog SERVPRO of Gateway covered some fire safety tips for the kitchen, living areas, and bedrooms. Here you’ll find more suggestions on locating possible fire hazards that exist in your home and reminders of how to keep you and your loved ones safe from structure fires.

In the bathroom:

• Ensure that proper care is taken when using candles in a restroom for deodorizing and that they are snuffed out before you leave

• Use appropriate incense plates or burners; do not leave cones or sticks lying on counters, shelving or windowsills

• Turn off hair styling irons before you walk away from it and invest in fire resistant holders

• Do not use, or charge, electronic devices near you while you are showering or bathing

• Before leaving home turn off any wax or oil potpourri pots

In the garage/storage:

• Chemicals such as fuels, solvents, cleaning agents, thinners, adhesives, and paints could ignite or explode due to improper storage. Make sure you take time to organize chemicals and to properly store them, preferably away from the house if possible. Dispose of anything that is damaged or leaking.

• Do not use stoves or barbecue grills inside the garage; you could not only start a fire, but also die from carbon monoxide inhalation

• If fire extinguishers are present in the home, ensure that everyone knows its location and how to use it. We also recommend having a fire plan in place.

Now, this is not a comprehensive list by any means, but these tips should be covered with family and/or roommates so that everyone understands where fire hazards exist for everyone’s safety and well-being. SERVPRO of Gateway hopes you never have to experience the effects of a fire loss where you live, but we are here to help if you ever need our services. Call us 24 hours a day at 216-575-1985

Water Damage is not a DIY Job!

2/9/2019 (Permalink)

Without question, the most important step a homeowner needs to take when faced with flood or other water damage is to waste no time in drying the area out. The old standby of setting up all your house fans to dry out a flooded area really isn’t very effective in the long run. It may do a satisfactory job on the surface, but deeper water damage to walls, wood, carpet and furniture, along with insufficient drying, can lead to more serious consequences such as mold and mildew growth, the flourishing of harmful bacteria, bugs in rotting wood and in extreme conditions, actual damage to the structural integrity of the home itself. To combat all these harmful possibilities and to prevent further costly damage; the best thing you can do is to call in a licensed water damage restoration specialist to tackle the job, like SERVPRO of Gateway. We are your flood damage and water damage specialists.

If you find yourself with a flooded basement, call SERVPRO of Gateway ASAP! 216-575-1985

First Responder Bowl Game Challenge

2/7/2019 (Permalink)

Presenting the check to Make A Wish

SERVPRO sponsored the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl Game in December. In line with that game, we wanted to honor our local first responders as well.

We created a bracket challenge set up like March Madness. Our local first responders had to pick a winner for each bowl game and whatever department had the most points at the end of the National Championship game, would win $1,000 to the charity of their choice.

Throughout all the Bowl games being played out, our leader board changed often. We had 17 brackets submitted to participate. Medina Fire and Medina Police were tied for first for awhile and then Brunswick Police and Brunswick Fire took over first. Eastlake Police were in the battle for 1st place as well.

After all bowl games had been played, Brunswick Fire, Brunswick Police and Eastlake Police were tied for 1st place. It came down to the National Championship game. If Alabama won, it was between Eastlake Police and Brunswick Police which would come down to a total point tie breaker. If Clemson won, Brunswick Fire would win.

By now, you know Clemson shocked everyone and won! Brunswick Fire Department was our winner. They selected Make A Wish to donate their $1,000 to. On January 28th we presented the $1,000 check to Make A Wish at the Brunswick City Council Meeting.

This was a fun opportunity to partner with our local first responders and we’re looking forward to the 2019 First Responder Bowl Game!

Frozen pipes cause water damage during arctic weather

1/16/2019 (Permalink)

When pipes freeze in extreme winter weather and then thaw out as temperatures rise, these pipes tend to crack and burst, causing leaking and flooding. A frozen pipe bursting can cause a lot of water damage in your home.

A home in Cleveland without a working furnace, even for a couple of hours can cause serious risks.  Recently SERVPRO of Gateway was called out to a home that was for sale in the area to mitigate a water damage.  Upon entering the home, the technicians discovered several feet of standing water in the basement. Moisture from the basement caused extensive damage to the upper floors.  Most of the materials including walls, ceilings, floors, and cabinets removed due to the water damage.

Prevent frozen pipes from damaging your home by keeping your home’s thermostat no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.  If you will be out of the home for a lengthy period, consider shutting off and draining your water system.

SERVPRO of Gateway Professionals have the experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather.

If you have water damage due to bad weather, Call SERVPRO of Gateway 216-575-1985.

Flooded Basements and Water Damage are not a DIY Job

1/16/2019 (Permalink)

Flooded basement repair is not a DIY job.

Despite the magazines, television shows, and Internet articles that may have you thinking otherwise, water damage restoration is a job that should only be performed by certified professionals. SERVPRO of Gateway technicians not only have the know-how to get the job done right, but they also have the specialized tools needed to thoroughly dry your home, preventing further damage and even mold.

Additional benefits of hiring a professional water damage restoration company:

  1. Health Hazards: Depending on the source of the water damage, safety can become a concern. There are three varying degrees of water damage, ranging from clean water to black water, each more hazardous than the next. Black water, the most dangerous of the three, is water that has come into contact with fecal matter, a haven for harmful bacteria and disease-causing pathogens.
  2. Hidden Damage: Water damage is not always obvious. Sometimes it is found inside walls and under flooring. If you attempt a DIY restoration and fail to diagnose hidden damage, the resulting issues could be extreme…and expensive.
  3. Peace of Mind: Hiring a professional restoration company gives you the peace of mind knowing you have done everything in your power to rectify the situation.

If you experience a flooded basement, leave the repair to our certified professionals.

What to know about water damage

1/16/2019 (Permalink)

You've seen the signs - a soft spot in the wall here, a strange splotch of color there. Signs of water damage can pop up at any time in your home and they're not something you want to ignore. Water damage can lead to foundation damage and subsidence but can also pose a health concern to the people in your home, too. This type of damage can be serious business, oftentimes. With that in mind, let's take a look at five things you need to know when dealing with water damage in your house.

You're not always going to see it - You've made it through the worst of it and several inches of water have drained out of your home. After a few days of airing and drying out, you feel as if your house is almost back to normal. Chances are, however, it's not. Signs of such damage are not always apparent- mold, rot, decay, and structural damage can be happening below the surface, without you even being aware of it. Even visual signs of mold may not be present.

It's not just about property damage - To put it plainly, water damage can be a health risk. Once mold is airborne it can damage the respiratory system of anyone in a house, but especially children and the elderly. Taking care of damage from water in your home is not just about keeping up your property- it's about preserving the health of your family and loved ones, too.

You want to catch it early - Water damage spreads, and what was once a small spot of damage can quickly escalate into a much larger issue. If you suspect that there has been damage from water to your home, even on a small scale, it might be best to get a damage survey done by a professional who can quickly assess your problem and take steps to reverse damage as early in its progress as possible.

The source won't always be obvious - Short of having an all-out flood in your home, there are still several "smaller" events that can cause water damage to your home, including faulty pipes, cracks in the foundation, and even the lightest rain.

It takes professionals to fix it - Fixing water damage in your home is not a DIY project. Due to some of the severe after-effects of water damage, including health risks, it's always best to have the professionals take on your water damage repair. A restoration expert can survey the damage and give you an estimate of the work and cost you're looking at, allowing you to get a thorough picture of what you need to do to get your home safe and sound once again.

If you are in need of flooded basement repair we are your local certified water damage restoration experts.

Things not to do after Fire Damage

1/4/2019 (Permalink)

If you experience fire or smoke damage in your home, here are some things that you should NOT do while waiting for your remediation team to arrive.

Don't:

  • Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of Gateway
  • Attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting SERVPRO of Gateway
  • Attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat, or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat, or water (they may be contaminated).
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create a secondary damage.
  • Send garments to dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

SERVPRO of Gateway has a group of certified and trained professionals that will make your home look “Like it never even happened.”

Home Fire Escape Plan

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Every second counts during a fire. Fire experts agree, people have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late to get out.

In a matter of moments, a small flame can become a major fire, making it critical to be prepared with an escape plan in place. A survey conducted by the American Red Cross shows only 26 percent of families have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. Once a plan is developed, it is critical that everyone in the home understands the plan; the best way to do this is by practicing the escape plan at least twice a year. Increase your chance of surviving a fire by ensuring you have working smoke detectors in place, building an escape plan, and then practicing the escape plan. The following are a few steps to help you develop an emergency escape plan:

Draw a map of each level of your home and show all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.

Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.

Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone can meet after they’ve escaped. Make sure to mark the meeting location on your escape plan. Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone in your home with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals. Practice your fire escape plan at night and during the daytime. SERVPRO of Gateway wants you to stay safe and prepare now to ensure you are ready for any disaster.

Fire Damage Restoration Services

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Gateway will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

When your basement floods

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Storms and flooding in Cleveland can lead to water buildup in the basement. As a homeowner, it’s important to understand what to do in these situations, how water gets down there in the first place, and ways to help prevent lasting damage.

How Water Gets Into the Basement

The first reaction for many when looking at a basement flood is to wonder how the water got there in the first place. There are several factors that may come into play.

  • An improperly functioning sump pump
  • Poor drainage around basement walls
  • Cracks or holes in the walls water can leak through
  • Issues with basement plumbing, such as a water heater
  • Heavy storm rains

Water buildup in the basement can cause further problems for your home. As water tends to flow in the least resistant path, it will find holes and cracks to flow through and continue to puddle at the lowest point unless otherwise prevented.

How To Take Care of Water in the Basement

If you find flooding in your basement, it’s best to contact a professional as soon as possible. He can assist with pipe repair, if needed, take care of the water removal, and assess your basement for the source of the problem. Many services also offer help with the drying and sanitation of the affected areas, as well as repair and mold remediation.

How To Prevent Floods

In some cases, there may be ways you can help prevent damage from a basement flood. These can include installing a sump pump if you do not currently have one, regularly checking to make sure plumbing is intact, and sloping your yard and landscaping away from your home. A professional may have further ideas on ways to help prevent water damage.

Understanding the how and why of basement flooding can help you contact the team you need for repairs and restoration. Knowing these things can also help you take the steps necessary to help protect your home.

Are you ready for winter?

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for the coming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business if you are not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet, or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can cause a damming effect, which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  • Ask SERVPRO® of Gateway about completing an Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no-cost assessment to your facility and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

When winter weather strikes call SERVPRO® of Gateway to strike back against water damage.

Drying Services

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

Does your home or business have important documents that are important to your well-being? In the event of a water at your home or business, SERVPRO® of Gateway offers document drying services for those important files or personal papers.

Vacuum Freeze Drying
Items containing moisture are frozen and dried using various vacuums and pressures to achieve sublimation (direct conversion of a solid into gas without passage through a liquid stage – think dry ice).

Digitizing
With the new age of technology, digitizing records and documents has become a standard practice in most industries. This eliminates the need to have massive file storage rooms and allows us to access records at the click of a button. If your file room was damaged by water and needs to be cleaned, dried, or decontaminated, digitizing might be a good choice to eliminate the need to have hundreds or even thousands of documents and records in storage.

Gamma Irradiation
Gamma irradiation is a process used for cleaning/disinfecting and decontaminating documents or other consumer goods. In gamma irradiation, high-energy photons are emitted from an isotope source (cobalt 60) producing ionization (electron disruptions) throughout a product. In a category 3 water loss situation (sewage or flood water), documents are not only dealing with that water, but also are infected with all types of bacteria. If this is the case, decontamination is a must. In living cells, these disruptions result in damage to the DNA and other cellular structures. These photon-induced changes at the molecular level cause the death of the organism or render the organism incapable of reproduction. The gamma process does not create residuals or impart radioactivity in processed products.

Certified Destruction
Unfortunately, many business and government agencies have to dispose of counterfeit, faulty, expired or contaminated materials. All entities need to be certified that their products and materials are destroyed. The guarantee of certified destruction is to protect one’s liabilities, brand image, or proprietary information. We guarantee certified destruction to give you peace of mind that your documents are disposed of properly.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Storm and Flood Damage After Heavy Rains

9/25/2018 (Permalink)

During a storm or heavy rains, drains and sewers can backup. This can cause severe damage to commercial property if not taken care of immediately. Dealing with contaminated water in Cleveland, Ohio is frustrating and can be dangerous. Sewer backups threaten your property as well as your employees and customers as it carries a risk for disease.

Excessive rain causes water to back up from municipal sanitary sewer systems. If water is coming up through floor drains or sink drains in the basement, it is not rain water; you likely have a sanitary issue.

Backwater Valve

A backwater check valve is one preventative solution to this issue. It is a self-operating valve that only allows water to flow in one direction. It does need to be cleaned every six months to a year. If well maintained, it will help prevent water from flowing in the opposite direction and causing sewer backup.

Contaminated Water Types

Category 1: “Clean water” – This type of water comes from a clean source. Broken water lines or faucet leaks are sources of clean water. Category one water can quickly degrade to a category two if left untreated. Many factors influence the degradation process: contact with contaminants, time, temperature and environment.

Category 2: “Gray Water” – This type of water is contaminated. If ingested it could cause stomach discomfort or illness. Some sources of category two water include an overflowing toilet containing some urine (no feces), an overflowing washing machine or a leaking dishwasher. Gray water may contain bacteria or viruses and can degrade to category three water if left untreated.

Category 3: “Black water” – This type of water is unsanitary to the point of causing serious illness. Any contact with this water should be avoided. It could contain sewage, microbes and harsh chemicals. Black water is caused by flooding from rivers and streams, an overflowing toilet containing fecal matter or water from beyond the toilet trap. If standing water starts to support microbial growth it is considered category three. Sewer backup is category three water.

The good news is that there are experts in sewage cleanup. These experts have the special training and equipment to safely deal such a disaster. If in question always call SERVPRO of Gateway at 1-800-933-7179

How To Care for Gym Floors

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

How To Care for Gym Floors

Gym floors are an important part of schools, churches and recreation centers. They are used for various events throughout the year and regular maintenance is important to keep them in good condition. While you want them to look nice it is also important for them to be safe for use. Unkempt floors in disrepair can be hazardous as well as unsightly.

Daily Maintenance

  1. It is important that gym floors be swept daily with a dust mop. Dirt and dust buildup will scratch the finish of the floor when it is walked on and can create a slipping hazard.
  2. Vacuum all walk off mats daily to ensure that the dust and dirt does not transfer to the gym floor.

As Needed Maintenance & Preventative Measures

  1. Use a damp mop once or twice a week to clean the gym floor and prevent dust.
  2. Ensure that there is no standing water left on the gym floor. Excess water on the floor can damage the wood
  3. Ensure that all tables and chairs have felt pads or use a floor covering to protect the gym floor.
  4. Walk-off mats are a great way to minimize the amount of tracked in dirt and water. These are placed at the entries and help absorb debris and water that would otherwise be tracked onto the gym floor.

Call SERVPRO of Gateway at 800-933-7179 to learn more about our cleaning services or to schedule an inspection. Our team would love to help ensure that your gym floors are in great shape!

Does your home or business have a mold problem?

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 72 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business in Cleveland, OH has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to re mediate your mold infestation.

Mold Remediation

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

Some answers and simple tips to help you prevent mold.

  • Identify problem areas in your home and correct them. You can't mold-proof your home, but you can make it mold-resistant.  Check your house for areas of concern and face them head on.  It might cost money up front but it will save you money down the road.  Pull up that carpet and install mold proofing products, find that water leak and fix it so it doesn’t creep inside the house, or repair that broken rain gutter.
  • Dry wet areas immediately. Mold can't grow without moisture, so tackle wet areas right away.  Even spills should be cleaned up ASAP.  The key is the small daily task that makes the difference. Be sure to dry the floor and walls after a shower. Don't leave wet clothes in the washing machine, where mold can spread quickly. Get them in the dryer and make sure to leave the door open and let your washer dryer out
  • Prevent moisture with proper ventilation. It may be that your routine activities are encouraging the growth of mold in your home. Make sure an activity as simple as cooking dinner, taking a shower, or doing a load of laundry doesn't invite mold by providing proper ventilation in your bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, and any other high-moisture area. Your energy-efficient home may be holding moisture inside, so open a window when cooking or washing dishes or showering, or run an exhaust fan.
  • Equip your home with mold-resistant products. Building a new home or renovating an old one? Use mold-resistant products like mold-resistant drywall or mold-resistant Sheetrock, and mold inhibitors for paints. This is especially import in moisture prone areas like the bathroom and kitchen.
  • Monitor humidity indoors. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 60 percent. You can measure humidity with a moisture meter purchased from a hardware store or online. You'll also be able to detect high humidity by simply paying attention to problem areas in your home. Signs of excessive humidity include condensation on windows, pipes, and walls. If you notice condensation, dry the surface immediately and address the source of the moisture
  • Direct water away from your home. If the ground around your home isn't sufficiently sloped away from the foundation, water may collect there and seep into your crawlspace or basement.
  • Clean or repair roof gutters. A mold problem might be a simple matter of a roof that is leaking because of full or damaged gutters. Have your roof gutters cleaned regularly and inspected for damage. Repair them as necessary, and keep an eye out for water stains after storms that may indicate a leak.
  • Improve air flow in your home. According to the EPA, as temperatures drop, the air is able to hold less moisture. Without good air flow in your home, that extra moisture may appear on your walls, windows and floors. To increase circulation, open doors between rooms, move furniture away from walls, and open doors to closets that may be colder than the rooms they’re in. Let fresh air in to reduce moisture and keep mold

Understanding Mold Growth.

8/23/2018 (Permalink)

Molds are part of the natural environment. Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided, according to the EPA. Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet or contain moisture. There are many types of mold, and none of them will grow without water or moisture.

Molds can gradually destroy the things they grow on. You can prevent damage to your home and furnishings, save money, and avoid potential health problems by controlling moisture and eliminating mold growth, according to the EPA.

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy. We understand mold and mold growth.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Importance

7/31/2018 (Permalink)

We all know to clean out the lint screen of our dryers, right? Did you know if you aren’t cleaning the lint out of the INSIDE and VENT of your dryer you are putting your family in danger of a house fire?  Over time lint will build up and settle in the bottom of your dryer and in your dryer vent.  If you don’t clean this out the heat from the dryer can ignite a fire inside your dryer.  You know what the boy scouts say, “lint is the great to start a fire”.

Here is an experience from someone who recently had a fire in her dryer and was lucky enough it didn’t start her house on fire.

Counting our blessings today… Last night we smelled something "burning" right as we were going to bed. We thought it was our renters burning food or something in their oven.  We had windows open and fans going but didn't really think much of it. Well this afternoon I went to get clothes out of the dryer, they smelled horrible!!! Like a cross between camp fire smoke and cigarette smoke. So I threw them back in the washer and told my husband. When he got home we pulled the bottom portion of the dryer off just to check things out. To our amazement (we haven't had this dryer THAT long - but bought it from someone else) there was burnt/singed lint everywhere. There had been a lint fire inside the bottom of our dryer last night. Our house seriously could have caught on fire. I'm so glad it didn't. Hence - we are counting our blessings today and I am spreading the word to all that you should go clean out under your lint catcher thing so your house doesn't start on fire!

Here are a few tips from www.familyhandyman.com on how to clean the lint out of your dryer.

Commom causes of Fires in Homes

5/22/2018 (Permalink)

Here are top 5 most common causes of house fires as identified by the National Fire Protection Association.

  1. Candles

From 2007-2011, the NFPA says there were an average of 10,630 fires in the U.S. that were started by candles, causing 115 deaths, 903 injuries and approximately $418 million in property damage. That is an average of 29 candle fires per day.

Safety tips:

  • Never leave a candle burning near flammable items.
  • Never leave a candle burning in a child’s room or an unoccupied room.
  • Make sure candles fit securing into candle holders so they won’t tip over.
  • Blow out any candles before leaving a room or going to sleep
  1. Smoking

While the number of fires caused by smoking is trending downward, the NFPA found that there were still an average of 17,600 related fires per year resulting in 490 deaths and more than $516 million in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • If you smoke, consider smoking outside.
  • Use wide, sturdy ashtrays to catch butts and ashes.
  • Look for cigarette butts under furniture and between seat cushions to make sure no lit butts have fallen someplace where they can’t be seen.
  • Don’t smoke in bed, when you’re tired or around medical oxygen.
  1. Electrical & Lighting

According to the NFPA, in 2011 approximately 47,700 home structure fires were caused by some sort of electrical failure or malfunction. These resulted in 418 deaths, 1,570 injuries and $1.4 billion in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • Don’t overload outlets or electrical cords.
  • Make sure you have the right cord for the job – inside cords for inside, heavy duty/outside cords for outdoor use.
  • Don’t leave Christmas lights, Christmas trees, or halogen lights on overnight or when not at home.
  • Consider having an electrician perform an annual checkup of your home’s wiring.
  1. Dryers & Washing Machines

Clothes dryer fires happen more often than one might think, accounting for 16,800 home structure fires in 2010 and doing more than $236 million in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • Clean the lint screen frequently and don’t run the dryer without it.
  • For gas and propane dryers, make sure there aren’t any leaks in the lines.
  • Vent the dryer to the outside of the house and ensure nothing blocks the vent pipe.
  • Clean the vent pipe and the area where the screen is housed.
  • Keep the area around the dryer free of combustible materials.

Prep your Home for Spring Cleaning

5/2/2018 (Permalink)

Clean Rain Gutters

Wind, animals, and gravity bring sticks, leaves, and other organic matter into your rain gutters, and chances are yours have accumulated their share of detritus over the winter. That's bad news for your home: When downspouts are clogged, rainwater can spill out of your gutters and around the perimeter of your house, putting it at risk for leaks and flooding. Get ready for spring showers by removing the mess from your gutters to ensure that the water will flow freely.

Change Filters

To maintain optimal air quality in your home, it’s a good idea to replace your HVAC system's air filter seasonally as well as the filter in your kitchen range hood. While you're at it, consider changing the filters in your water purification system. Depending on your water, you might not need to change these as often as your HVAC filters, but it's not a bad idea to check them now. So, go ahead and welcome spring with new filters all around to keep your home clean and fresh, and your appliances in good working order.

Check Vents

As snow melts away from your home’s foundation, it’s a good time to check any vents along the foundation or in the attic. Look for missing or damaged screens, debris, signs of insect or rodent infestation, or other issues, and correct them before they have a chance to become bigger problems later in the season.

Check the Roof

Take advantage of the sun’s return to check your roof for cracked or missing shingles or tiles, and examine flashing around vents and the chimney for damage. While you’re at it, have the chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional.

Characteristics of Mold

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

You probably have many checklists that apply to your commercial building. With all the regular maintenance routines and proper repairs, finding black mold growth – or any type of mold invasion – can come as a complete shock. However, you might be wondering what mold looks like in the first place. The following list includes three angles from which you can better identify mold.

1. Color

If you've observed some funky colors spring up around the company sink, you may have a mold cleanup in your future. Most commonly known as Alternaria, this kind of mold frequents bathrooms and other damp places indoors. This fungus spreads quickly, so you'll want to address even minor problems in a timely manner.

2. Texture

Another way you can detect mold in your building is by observing its texture. If you've tried cleaning those worn-out carpets time and again to no avail, a mold called Cladosporium could be your culprit. In addition, not all dark colored molds are black mold; this dark colored mold with a suede-like texture loves to thrive in carpets and upholsteries. Cladosporium is also known to grow in both warm and cool climates. Some molds may take on powdery textures, while others can take on a slimy appearance.

3. Smell

Most Ogden, UT, residents are familiar with that musty smell that can pop up in basements or other dark, humid places. Black mold could be present if that earthy smell just won't go away. Even if your building has never had past moisture damage, this kind of mold easily feeds on damp drywall and even dusty corners. Hiring a professional is usually your best bet when it comes to detecting types of mold, since identifying and determining all those subtle growth spots could prove challenging.
